Description

In the summer of 2018 the story broke of the mistreatment of members of the Windrush generation. As a consequence of the government’s attempts to reduce immigration, it transpired that British subjects had been wrongly deported and detained, lost their jobs and homes, and were denied benefits and medical treatment. This story precipitated a poetry conversation.

Nigel Kent and Sarah Thomson took the UK Government’s creation of a ‘Hostile Environment’ and created a poetry conversation as beautiful and it is hard hitting, shining a stark light on a shameful episode in Britain’s history.

About Nigel Kent

Nigel Kent is a poet living in rural Worcestershire. He is an active member of the Open University Poetry Association and occasional editor of its workshop magazine. He has been shortlisted for several national competitions and his poetry has appeared in a range of publications such as A Restricted View Under the Hedge, The Road to Clifton Pier, Lost things, Poems for Keeps, What the Elephant said to the Peacock, What the Peacock Replied, Persona non Grata, and The Pocket Book of Anger, South Poetry Magazine, Acumen, Eye Flash Poetry. His poetry conversation pamphlet, ‘A Hostile Environment’, written in collaboration with Sarah Thomson, was published by Hedgehog Poetry Press in January 2019, and a second conversation, ‘Thinking You Home’ in June 2019. His poetry has been translated and appeared in the literary journals, Pro Saeculum and Banchetul. Saudade’ is his first collection. About Sarah Thomson

Sarah grew up by the sea in Weymouth, Dorset and now lives in Bristol. She developed a love for writing from an early age and her studies included English at the University of Exeter. After a varied career in publishing, accountancy and Human Resources, Sarah is now a full-time writer of poetry, novels and lyrics. In 2017 she was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize and a winner of the Persimmon International Poets Competition. Her poem ‘Mercy’ was highly commended by The Hedgehog Poetry Press and published in The Road to Clevedon Pier in 2018. The Hedgehog Poetry Press also published ‘A Hostile Environment’, her poetry conversation with Nigel Kent, in the same year and a second conversation ‘Thinking you Home’ in 2019.
