November Challenge: “The Poetry Ration Book”

Background: For November (and into December, although there will be another December Challenge too) I wanted us to widen the scope of this challenge, and make it more of an ‘and friends’ kind of thing. The best way that I could think of doing that, (without getting technical, which never ends well for me,) was to ask you to do a Challenge, but then get you to invite some friends along too. So that is what this is about – I Challenge you to write a poem, and then you Challenge Four more poets to join in too. Simple really ,I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. They don’t have to join the Cult or anything, no strings at all. The Challenge: In a world where resources are getting scarcer and people are more conscious than ever that we can’t always rely on politicians – or even professional footballers – to make sure that everybody gets their fair share, it has reached a point where Poetry itself needs to be rationed. As members of our wonderful Cult, you have been charged with providing FIVE Poems for what will become ‘The Poetry Ration Book.’ These poems will describe a Single Day in the Poet’s Life and the finished book will hopefully provide a source of inspiration, in easily digested (or perhaps not) meals. This however, is a challenge with a difference, as you will only be writing ONE of the poems, The other Four poems must come from friends, colleagues or random strangers, who you personally Challenge to write a poem that tells us something about ONE DAY IN THE CHALLENGED POET’S LIFE. To be clear:
- You must submit FIVE Poems in a single document (Doc, Docx, RTF, TXT etc.)
- The Poems must describe a Single Day in the life of a poet
- You should only write ONE of the Poems
- The other Four Poems must come from Four other poets who you personally have Challenged
- Poems should be upto forty lines
- Poems can be of any type, style, form…etc.
- All poems should be new and unpublished
- All you have to do is email me your entry by the 31st of December to: competition@hedgehogpress.co.uk
