The Hedgehog Poetry Press launched in October 2017, and it already seems a long time ago.
Initially, the plan was for four friends to go on an Enid Blyton-esque journey that would see them create the finest poetry publisher the world had ever seen, using a tunnel under the sea to make their way to the hitherto unknown cafe that housed some of the most coconutty Macaroons ever.
Naturally, three of them watched an episode of ‘Why Don’t You…’ on YouTube and went outside to do something more interesting instead.
That left me with a bad drawing of a Hedgehog and not having a lot else to do, I thought I would see how the poetry thing developed.
But who am I? Well, my name is Mark Davidson and you may know me from…well, to be honest you won’t know me at all right now, but that may change as time goes on.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve been a poetry nut for years and have been writing, editing and publishing magazines and books for the longest time in between making weird looking guitars, but this was something new and not really being part of the way it has always been done, I decided to do it the way that seemed to make sense to me. Frankly, I didn’t know any better, but that was OK with me.
Being a bit of a control freak, this has seen me judge an Anthology competition and soon to judge a Collection competition. In future I may use other judges, but we’ll see.
Other than that, I plan for us to publish four single poet collections in book form each year, probably an annual anthology and then all manner of weird pamphlets as what seems to be a good idea occurs to me.
There is also the ‘Cult of the Spiny Hog’ which is a Reading and Writing Club that will always be limited to 100 poets and hopefully will help me both spread the word and have some fun with it all.
So if you read the website and see the word ‘we’, it is delusions of grandeur as it is only me for now, and if I am a little slow to reply or do something, I’ll apologise now but will get there in the end. Other than that, I really don’t know whether this will work or not, but you are more than welcome along for the ride.
If you wish to submit poetry for ‘A Restricted View From Under The Hedge’ or one of our competitions, we would appreciate it if you would use the appropriate pages to upload your work in PDF form. However, if that causes a problem, just drop us an email and we can work it out. It isn’t meant to be a test.
If you wish to send us a poetry collection for possible review in our magazine, please have a look at our Book Review Policy, Here before you reach for the Jiffy.
