Cult Challenge: January 2025: “Poems for Taylor Swift and Other Unicorns”

There is something particularly special about teenage – or pre-teen (I’m sure there is a demographic name out there that I’m missing)  – obsessions that in many ways follow us for the rest of our lives and perhaps shape if not define us.

Taylor Swift these days, could have been Take That or the Spice Girls, not that long ago – Marc Bolan or the Beatles and the Stones earlier still.

I’m sure Mozart was giving the ladies and laddies the vapors too, come to think about it.

So this challenge is really about innocence and innocent obsession with the images of people that are very unlikely to be based on reality.

Of course that equally applies to religion and politics, being a fan of a football team or anything else where you define yourself in some way.

To be clear:

    1. Write a Poem that looks at your younger self and tries to identify your own youthful obsession, exploring it with a little detachment.
    2. The Winning poets will see their work featured in a rather nice wee book during 2025

Rules:

    1. There are no length constraints
    2. You must be a Cult Member to submit your poem – sending it to competition@hedgehogpress.co.uk
    3. Send the poem by 11.59pm on the 31st of January 2025
