PRE-ORDERS ARE OPEN: “A Wallet of Creature Poems” – Sue Spiers

Well, I think our brilliant wee Little Black Books are the poetry success story of the year (in Hogland, anyway) and I am astonishingly chuffed to say that Pre-Orders are NOW OPEN for this little beauty from the rather wonderful Sue Spiers.

Signed copies are only ever going to be available from the lady herself, so don’t be shy – grab one while they last.

Your know it makes sense.

What happens when a suburban housewife takes a look at the wildlife in her garden and street? What happens when she imagines she speaks like a deadly snake, becomes a tough-skinned rhino or visits Tutankhamun’s tomb with Carter? Would she be shocked if her neighbour started up a pet crematorium?

A Wallet of Creature Poems takes a look at some of the less cuddly creatures that fascinate the poet. Some poems were inspired by encounters with squirrel, pigeon and fox. Others are imaginative exploration of the voice of a Taipan snake, an Egyptian scarab beetle, and an invitation to ‘think about what creature you’d be’. One poem comes from a local advert for pet cremation where the accountant considers diversification for the business.

“Sue Spiers’ mini-pamphlet is a delight. Brief it may be, yet gives nonetheless ample testimony to her rhythmical astuteness and a sharp-eyed focus on the natural world that can surprise you with the truth of her insights, as in ‘Acrobats’, where she concludes that ‘failing doesn’t mean you can’t go on.’”

David Cooke – The High Window

“These poems depict animals as themselves, as symbols and as wise creatures with the innate talent of how to go on. Moreover, Sue Spiers ensures that becoming a rhino would be an enviable reincarnation.  I for one can’t wait to grow solid as an anvil . . .”

Helen Ivory – Ink, Sweat & Tears

Sue Spiers was born in Cyprus, her father was in the R.A.F. and consequently her family moved every three years to wherever he was posted. In 2000 she started an MBA with the Open University to see if she had what it takes to complete a degree, having gone into a trainee accountancy position on completion of A levels. The MBA lead to a BA in Literature and joining the Open University Poetry Society.
